Take a look at the pictures and decide if you would call this radio an 8 out of 10.
I would call it about a 4 out of 10.

(Click on the small images to view a larger image in another browser window.)

On the left is the top cover, left rear. Note the Rust and corrosion.

On the right is the bottom cover.

This is the top cover front left corner. Note the rust and corrosion which wraps around inside the corner.

On the left is the bottom cover, left rear corner.

On the right is the top cover, left rear corner.

This is the top cover, front left corner.
Both top and bottom covers looking at the left inside of both.
Top cover, front inside, rust in both corners and all along the front edge.
Face plate, left side showing the rust deposited there from the covers.
This is the left side of the chassis showing extensive corrosion. There appears to have been some attempt to scrape some of the corrosion away.
Chassis, left side rear, viewed from the bottom. The entire side of the chassis is corroded.
Another view of the bottom left corner of the chassis showing corrosion going down inside.
This is the top left corner of the chassis showing the corrosion there.

This email includes the text of several we exchanged leading up to shipping of the radio and then my email to him expressing my concern about the rust and corrosion. You can see what he said in his response. He never sent me the $20. I never sent him a virus:

u sure its not just normal stuff from age....I said it look like a 8 because
it does I never had the cover off so I have no Idea what that looks like!
So will 20.00 back make u happy??I don't open radios if they work I don't
worry about them if they fail I send them in and that is far as I go

Received the radio today.

I must say I am disappointed. This isn't an 8 out of 10 radio. You failed
to point out the obvious rust on the case indicating the radio had been
wet. Removing the covers reveals a significant amount of corrosion inside.

Though the radio appears to work, it's value due to the corrosion is
certainly impacted and I feel you should have disclosed that in your
auction.

My response to his email (sent at 9:15PM, 10/30/2002):

Ken,

This wasn't meant to be a personal attack on you.
I'm sorry you appear to have taken it that way.
I was trying to help you see that the radio wasn't
as you advertised and why.

I have taken some pictures which you can see here
on my web page:

http://w4zt.com/dr600/baddeal.html (was http://w4zt.com/dr600/index.html)

I hope these will satisfy you that this is not a simple
case of normal wear and tear on the radio. I'll accept
the fact that you didn't open the radio and may not have
been aware of the internal damage but the rust along
the edges should have given you a hint that there was
something wrong.

Hams usually look closely at any signs of rust on
equipment as indicators of exposure to moisture and
worth a second look. I think you will agree after
seeing these pictures that it was warranted.

With regard to your comment about a virus, I don't
use Outlook in any form, I use Eudora for email, and
I don't send attachments. Symantec provides
virus protection. I see from your email that you are
running Outlook and you might want to look closer at
other email you may have received.

Hopefully this clears the air.

73,
Tony
